An introduction to the author:
Robert Shields
I graduated with a BSc (Hons) Marine Biology degree from Newcastle University in 2009.
After taking a year out I returned to Newcastle University to do a PhD, starting in 2010, at the Centre for Oral Health Research.
My academic passion is biomedical science – ideally creating novel health care products from useful parts of marine life. I like communicating my ideas and interests in a friendly, informative manner – no buzzwords allowed!
How it Started
I started the blog in fall 2009 – I was out of work and needed something to fuel my science passion until I was back in the world of academia. Although not updated frequently, every now and then I get an idea that I must put down on paper! The sole aim is to educate science in an easy to read style.

The articles are based on my own reading and research of scientific literature – based on scientific facts. The way in which I express these facts are my own and as such I’d prefer my articles to remain mine!
